PITTSBURGH — The Tree of Life is thanking the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania after receiving a $4 million award through the Redevelopment Assistance Capital Program (RACP) to support the ongoing reimagining of the site of the deadliest antisemitic attack in U.S. history.
“This generous grant brings us closer to realizing our vision of a space that honors those we lost while standing as a beacon of hope and resilience for generations to come,” said Carole Zawatsky, CEO of The Tree of Life. “We are incredibly grateful to Governor Shapiro and the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania for their commitment to supporting our mission both through this grant and their history of standing with The Tree of Life.”
The grant will enable The Tree of Life to preserve the historic elements of the building, including its beloved stained-glass window. It will also support the development of its museum space, classrooms and exhibitions, as well as the modernization of the sanctuary to create a flexible, welcoming space for worship, celebrations, and educational and community events.
“We are so grateful to Governor Shapiro and our state legislators for this substantial investment into The Tree of Life through RACP,” said Michael Bernstein, The Tree of Life board chair. “Throughout the project, we have felt an immense responsibility to move with care as we do something that nobody has ever done before and rebuild the site of the deadliest antisemitic attack in U.S. history. The incredible support of Pennsylvania’s leaders ensures we can move forward with intentionality as we prepare to begin rebuilding and turn our focus to program development.”
